Map service: A service providing geospatial data in form of rendered images

Matrix population models: In population modelling, matrix population models are a useful and powerful tools for investigation of population dynamics of animals and plant populations.

Metadata: Metadata are data records that provide descriptive information about other data.

Metadata profile: A metadata profile is a recommended subset of the elements of a metadata standard for use by a particular community of users.

Metagenomics: The study of metagenomes, genetic material recovered from environmental samples.

Metagenetic analysis:The high-throughput sequencing of a molecular marker from an ecosystem or a community of organisms, used for large-scale analyses of biodiversity.

Meta-information, also meta-data: Descriptive information about data in the universe of discourse. The need for meta-information arises from additional tasks or a particular purpose (like catalogue organisation), where many different resources (services and data objects) must be handled by common methods and therefore have to have/get common attributes and descriptions (like a location or the classification of a book in a library.)

Metapopulation: A metapopulation is a network of populations linked by dispersal/migration. For every species, habitat is distributed heterogeneously, in patches across the landscape. In addition, not all habitat has the same degree of suitability. Some patches are relatively dry and warm, others more humid and cool. In population biological terms, these environmental differences could translate into different population growth rates, e.g. if the species is drought-sensitive. Populations in the dry patches might not be able to persist without regular influx of individuals from nearby humid patches, creating a so-called source-sink model of metapopulation dynamics. See also population modelling.

At the final review of the project by the EC, one of the reviewers said: “Incredible work done with a community that is not unified. Remarkable work. It opens for new development in a near future. Hope for success. Good project. Happy that you have been financed three plus years ago.”
