Bayesian inference: A form of statistical inference which uses a set of prior beliefs (prior probabilities). It then uses the observed data to modify those beliefs in the face of the evidence (posterior probabilities).

Beanshell: Beanshell is a Java scripting language. A Beanshell service in Taverna enables to write simple Java code snippets and execute them as part of the workflows, typically performing data manipulation, parsing and formatting.

Biodiversity: The variety of all forms of life, from ecosystems to species and genes

Biodiversity indicator: An organism or a group of organisms responding to environmental stress, such as pollution, nutrient enrichment, habitat loss or over-exploitation

Biomass: Biomass is biological material from living, or recently living organisms, most often referring to plants or plant-derived materials. As a renewable energy source, biomass can either be used directly, or indirectly—once or converted into another type of energy product such as biofuel. Biomass can be converted to energy in three ways: thermal conversion, chemical conversion, and biochemical conversion.

Biospheric carbon sequestration: The idea of capturing (excess) carbon from the atmosphere in forests and other biomass.

BioSTIF:  BioVeL Spatio-Temporal Interactive interFace (Web Tool/Interaction Service)

BioVeL: Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory

BIS, TDWG: Biodiversity Information Standards (formerly known as the Taxonomic Database Working Group, or TDWG) is an international body established to define standards for use in biological data projects.

BLAST: Basic Local Alignment Search Tool

Bootstrapping: A statistical resampling method for assigning measures of accuracy to sample estimates.
