For research groups (infrastructure managers, sysadmins) wanting to build and deploy their own virtual laboratory (much as one might build their own physical laboratory), the BioVeL Portal infrastructure is packaged and distributed as a virtual machine appliance, compliant with the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) standard. This is available from the EGI Cloud marketplace and can be deployed to a wide range of virtual cloud frameworks.
Making BioVeL available as a virtual machine facilitates easy implementation of the research environment on a range of different infrastructures and completely under the control of the scientists/research group needing it. Once deployed the environment can be customized as required by adding new workflows, services and tools or even changing the look and feel of the Portal to match the group's own branding. In this way the BioVeL infrastructure can be used as a starting point for a diverse range of in silico research needs. This approach has already been adopted by the Flanders Marine Institute, who have installed the BioVeL infrastructure as part of the LifeWatch Marine Virtual Research Environment. It is also presently being explored by NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology for studying climatic change effects on phenology.
