BioVeL and other European Institutions

BioVeL also pools interests and shared-knowledge on biodiversity research, and fosters an international community of researchers and partners on biodiversity issues, including active liaison to other biodiversity informatics projects, such as ViBRANT and Creative-B.



BioVeL will contribute to LifeWatch.

LifeWatch is the research infrastructure program initiated in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) to construct and operate facilities, including virtual laboratories for biodiversity research. BioVeL's e-infrastructure for data analysis of biodiversity research is one of a number of European projects contributing to LifeWatch. Acting in a local, bottom-up manner, LifeWatch anticipates and encourages projects like BioVel to contribute towards its construction. BioVel will eventually hand over the results of its work to LifeWatch for continued operation.



BioVeL will contribute to GEO BON.

The Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) coordinates activities relating to the Societal Benefit Area (SBA) on Biodiversity of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Some 100 governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations are collaborating through GEO BON to organize and improve terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity observations globally and make their biodiversity data, information and forecasts more readily accessible to policymakers, managers, experts and other users. The success of global authorities such as GEO BON in fighting biodiversity loss largely relies on the assessment of biodiversity change on a large scale. BioVeL development of tools to analyse vast amounts of data and the establishment of an e-Science environment for Europe's biodiversity research community can be very effective to support GEO BON's activity. BioVeL expects to contribute to GEO BON's endeavour.
