FAQ

pecheWhat is a workflow?

A "workflow" is a succesion of data analysis steps also called "services."
For more information, please see this page of the site.

Where can I find documentation about BioVeL workflows and services?

You can find documentation about BioVeL workflows and services on our documentation site.

I am currently using R to perform basic statistics. How do the WFs operate?

Taverna Workflow Management System includes a facility that allows R scripts to be inserted as a discrete step in the workflow. When the workflow is executed and an R script step is encountered, the script is sent to an R server where it is executed and the result is then returned to the workflow to continue to the next step.

The population modelling workflows work this way. They encapsulate various R scripts developed for population modelling. They do it in a way that provides a family of useful workflows that can be mix and matched to meet a researcher's needs.

It would be possible to create workflow fragments encapsulating your own scripts and to join the fragments with those of the population modelling family - ensuring, of course that the outputs of one fragment match the inputs of the next.

How much does it cost?

BioVeL workflows and services are free and in open-source (for further information on BioVeL's funding, click here). We simply ask you to please credit BioVeL in your research publications by adding the following lines: These results come from the processing of data (personal source or others--cite which one, i.e. GBIF) through BioVeL's services (www.biovel.eu). The XXX (names of the workflows) workflows were run on xxxxxxx (date of the WF run). BioVeL is funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Program, grant no. 283359.
