The European Commission (Unit Research Infrastructures) and the LifeWatch research infrastructure project together initiated the organization of a workshop “Towards a Roadmap for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research Infrastructures in Europe.”

A decadal view of biodiversity informatics: challenges and priorities

Alex Hardisty, BioVeL coordinator, Dave Roberts, ViBRANT project, and the Biodiversity Informatics Community launched a consultation on a 10-year vision for biodiversity informatics.
Individual contributions from 77 leaders in the biodiversity informatics field were compiled and edited by the authors to create a comprehensive vision for the future, representing a call-to-arms for funding priorities in this area. The results of this project have been published in open-access in BMC Ecology. Read the entire article.

BioVeL is funded by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme (FP7) as part of its e-Infrastructures activity (Grant no. 283359). Under FP7, the e-Infrastructures activity is part of the Research Infrastructures programme, funded under the FP7 'Capacities' Specific Programme. It focuses on the further development and evolution of the high-capacity and high-performance communication network (GÉANT), distributed computing infrastructures (grids and clouds), supercomputer infrastructures, simulation software, scientific data infrastructures, e-Science services as well as on the adoption of e-Infrastructures by user communities.
